so since a few years ago when deviantart was bubbling with life, i was just wondering: how many of you are now living off photography, how many of you are working towards the dream of being a full time photographer, who just does it for a hobby and i guess the silence will let me know who doesn't go on da anymore :)

in the time i've been gone i've managed to create my dream of being a full time photographer come true. i live on my own with my boyfriend dan and my life in now a beautiful cycle of shooting and editing.

well, I think I'm kinda weird... I love photography, I will always take photos etc., but I don't wanna go to college to learn photography and then become a professional photographer. I've always wanted to be a surgeon. And even though I love photography and it's my biggest passion, it still haven't changed anything. Every day, I feel like I wanna be a surgeon even more than I wanted it the day before :)

My dream is to become a full time photographer after college. Something that just started out as a hobby now brings me more and more joy and I really can't think of what else I would do with my life if not photography. I have been feeling rather frustrated with myself of late, wanting to grow and learn faster! But I'm trying to not be so hard on my self and know that growth takes time. I will achieve my dream some day.

I hope to one day be a part-time to full-time photographer, depending on the part of the year. Right now I sometimes go weeks without shooting. I want to change that.

i used to do that too. perhaps you could try a 52 week project? just to keep you motivated and so you don't fall behind on shooting. once you get into the habit of taking photos all the time, it's such a great feeling! and i hope you get to your goal <3

Well I'm primarily a portrait photographer. The problem isn't that I can't find the motivation to take pictures, it's that I can never find many willing models to participate. But I take pictures when I can.

Photography is simply a hobby of mine - I sporadically earn some extra spending cash if I shoot events, but my true love for it lies within the art of it. I'm happy for it to be a hobby as I'm quite focussed on progressing my career in education.

I've been following you for a couple of years now and I'm glad to see that you were able to turn it into something fulltime :)

that's so lovely to hear that you really enjoy it and still earn a bit of cash here and there! what do you plan on doing within your career with education?

I Love taking pictures, would love to be a photographer ( especially with nature as main subject.. ) But I don't have the time.. last year I failed my exams, So right now I have to focus on my study..
but besides the lack of time, I don't believe I'll ever be good enough to work as a professional.. I don't have the proper equipment, and still don't own the knowledge.. so, right now I'll stick on to it as a beloved hobby..

things like "proper" equipment (and i say that with quotation marks because you don't need expensive cameras to create amazing photos) and knowledge are something you gain along the while, while you are pursuing your hobby to turn it into something more, i believe. sure, you could spend hours upon days in a classroom waiting for someone to teach you these things, but i think the best way to learn is to just do. especially with photography, since its such a subjective thing. no one can tell you what's right and what's wrong :)

as long as you are still doing it though for as long as you love it, is what counts <3

Ofcourse I know that expensive cameras are not needed,
but I don't own a reflex camera ( not sure if that's the right word,.. )
and that's something I really really want.. just so I can get really into photography.. and don't get me wrong, I know knowledge is something of experiences and just trying, but I do want to learn more about it.. And yeah, I love it ! even I don't have the time anymore, I take every moment I get to go out and take some pictures :)
I'm happy for you that everything turned out so well :)

i'm sorry i didn't mean to take it out on you or anything, but it's great that you want an slr! (i think reflex is also another right word for it!).

i really hope you continue your photography adventures, it's so lovely that you want to learn more and grow! x

Well I recently have done my first wedding shoot in August and next week doing my second one though not alone but with a friend it's been fun. I would love to do it for a living, being a photographer that is. I love the way it feels to have a camera in my hands and when I capture what I intend to its an incredible feeling, you know? I don't know if many people take my photography seriously though. People are so judgmental, drives me crazy.

that sounds wonderful that you've started shooting weddings! that's how it starts too, shooting a few here and there, by yourself, with a friend, with a fellow photographer.. then it moves on to working with other professionals in the industry and the ball will start rolling for you :)

and i whole heartedly agree with what you said; that is the exact reason why i love being a photographer. we are memory makers, wielding lovely thoughts and images from nothing but light and emotion. trying to reflect a series of moments into a single photo to tell a story.

but trust me, if you work hard and you are passionate, you can make anything work <3

I'm a writer here on DA and in the world at large. Writing hasn't been a hobby for me since I was sixteen. I do some writing professional, but it isn't creative. I'll write until I am dead.

I don't post on people's work because nobody posts on mine. There are many good photographers here, but very few writers. There are maybe 2 or 3 good ones in the thousands of writers I've come across here.

"i write until i am dead" sounds like a very monotonous and sad thing, i wonder if you still enjoy your job at all even though it isn't creative?

da has gotten a little quiet. i remember a time when it was bursting with life and there were so many talents uploading their work each day.. photographers, writers, painters, everyone. do you ever write things that you enjoy in your spare time?

Sounds like you're living your dream life, Good for you! and Many Congrats! I've begun doing portraits and recently my first maternity shoot, which is fun. But, I still rather enjoy nature and natural lighting and of course, that is just a hobby for me. But one I really enjoy. OH, but if I could bust into Equine photography that would be my dream job! :) A girls gotta have a dream right?

I'm sadly not an artist :/ but I love art.

I do, however, do carpentry. Been taking that a little more seriously now. Doing it semi-professionally.

Anyway keep up the amazing work.

that's okay too! and awesome that you do carpentry, i don't think i'd be able to do a job like that - everyone has their talents hidden in different places! and thank you :)

Right now, photography is just a hobby for me, but I think it could potentially become something more, or at least I'm hoping so, haha. I've improved a lot though, and things just keep getting better and better, so I think whichever direction I go in, it will be good. :)

I'm glad that things are going so well for you! You certainly deserve it! :)

that sounds lovely! it's exactly how it was for me too. i found deviantart and photography was nothing but a hobby. after a while i started getting more and more into it before the line between hobby and professional is blurred :) you will make it if you put your heart to it! <3
